Movie Review: When in Rome 5

Posted on June 22, 2010 by Lisa

Over the weekend, my hubby and I had an evening to ourselves. The kids went into another room to see some shows on tv while the “lovebirds” (aka hubby & I) sat on the sofa like a couple of teenagers in love.

Every time I see a romantic comedy, I get all excited. It’s my favorite type of movie. I get my pillow and blanket ready to get comfy on the sofa.  It’s “my” tradition when it’s movie time at our house.

I was really looking forward to seeing When in Rome because it came from the studios that brought us The Proposal, which I loved! But I have to be honest and say that When in Rome wasn’t my most favorite romantic comedy movie.

Maybe it’s because I didn’t see that spark you see when you’re watching a romantic comedy between two people “in love”.  The spark between Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel just wasn’t there.

Don’t get me wrong, I liked the movie but it didn’t touch me like The Proposal did.

The one thing that I loved about the movie is that I learned something new.  I learned that there is a unique way of dining that is quite real.  It’s called Dining in the Dark.  I never knew there was such a thing as eating dinner in complete darkness at a restaurant.  I would love to experience having dinner in the dark. It seems so romantic. ;)

If you love romantic comedies, you’ll probably like When in Rome. You may just have a different view than I had.

Below is a trailer & a synopsis of the movie:

An ambitious young New Yorker (Kristen Bell), disillusioned with romance, takes a whirlwind trip to Rome where she defiantly plucks magic coins from a fountain of love, inexplicably igniting the passion of those who threw them in: a sausage magnate (Danny DeVito), a street magician (John Heder), an adoring painter (Will Arnet) and a self-admiring model (Dax Shepard). But when a charming reporter (Josh Duhamel) pursues her with equal zest, how will she know if his love is the real thing?

Below are some clips that I enjoyed.

Suitors Make A Scene:

Breath spray:

Q & A With Kristen Bell & Josh Duhamel

Q: Kristen, how much fun was it being pursued by all these guys?
KB: Well first of all, being surrounded by these guys was great and it is so flattering, because they are all wonderful and funny. I love their comedy and style and I often laugh out loud at them. I was grateful for the opportunity of working with all these guys. I’m glad that they had the faith in me to be able to pull it off and I just tried to do the best I could. Sometimes I could not stop laughing on set because they are all so funny.

Q: Can you explain a little about what happens to your character when she is in Rome?
KB: She goes to Rome for her sister’s wedding – and in a drunken stupor, wades into the fountain and takes out several coins. Then the guys that have thrown them in wishing for love or passion start to stalk her. There’s a lot of chasing and running around in heels. I loved being the object of affection of all those men, from Will Arnett to Dax Shepard. Oh yes, and did I mention I get to kiss Josh Duhamel?

Q: Josh, can you talk about Nick’s relationship with Beth?
JD: We really hit it off in the beginning. It almost seems like love at first sight; it’s going that well. And then something happens and she doesn’t want to talk to him again. After that it’s all about him trying to get her back, a lot of the story is how he is trying to figure out what happened. He thought that everything was perfect, and then all of a sudden it wasn’t.’ Then he finds out why and he discovers that he’s competing with these other guys, and he doesn’t know why he’s doing that either. So it’s pretty chaotic.

Q: Kristen are you driven in real life – like your character? What comes first for you – career or romance?
KB: Personally I think your significant other should be way more important than your work. I love to work, but I don’t know that I’d say I’m a workaholic because I also love relaxing. I have a great balance I think and love both.

Q: Do you believe in magic and superstition?
KB: I am not very superstitious at all. I never have been. I’ll walk under ladders. Who cares? I like to smash mirrors any chance I get. (laughs).

Q: Josh, what was it like playing the romantic good looking leading man?
JD: To be truthful, more than being the good-looking guy, I had to be the straight man. They decided it would be funny if I took some pratfalls and bumped into things, so you see me doing a lot of that in the movie.

Q: Can you talk about the physical comedy. Did that come naturally – did you get injured at all?
JD: There was a scene where I was supposed to run into this car but the stunt coordinator had it set up so that the car was going to sweep out my leg and I was going to roll under the front of the hood and roll up onto the windshield and look in and see that it’s my friend Puck. It wasn’t the most well conceived stunt ever performed – it took us a few times to get it right. So I’m running at this car and the first two times we did it, I literally went right over the top of the car and one time fell on my shoulder or on my neck. And then another time I fell over the other edge of the car and they almost pulled the plug on the stunt. But I talked them into letting me do it one more time and I figured it out. But to answer your question, this kind of comedy fits in with the way I am anyway. I’m clumsy in real life, so I just had a lot of fun coming up with as much funny stuff as possible in this movie.

VTech MobiGo Touch Learning System | Review and Giveaway 141

Posted on June 08, 2010 by Lisa

Recently, my five year daughter and I had the opportunity to try out a brand new and fun product from V-Tech.  It’s called the MobiGo Touch Learning System. We received it over the weekend and already she’s a pro at it.  She loves it and takes it everywhere she goes.  I’m happy to say she doesn’t ask for my iPod Touch as much as before (Thank you V-Tech!).

I love that it’s portable and she can play with it anywhere. It’s especially great for those long, boring doctor appointments or long rides in the car.

Yesterday, when we were at the supermarket check-out, one of the parents I know tapped me on the shoulders and asked me where I got the MobiGo from. She said she hasn’t seen that anywhere so she was curious.  I was happy to say that I got it for review purposes only. She said she couldn’t wait to buy one for her son who just turned 3 years old.

Look at that, it’s not available until August (unless you go to Toys R Us) and there are parents waiting to get their hands on the MobiGo for their kids!

Below are several features of the MobiGo Touch Screen Learning System:

  • Touch-Screen: Applying Touch control that includes tap, flick, pat and drag & drop, kids learn with fun on the same technology as parents do with their touch-screen devices.
  • Educational games: From coloring, drawing and playing instruments, kids can discover a wide variety of fun and engaging learning games. MobiGo teaches a wide range of skills including math, vocabulary, spelling, logic and categorization. The slide open QWERTY keyboard introduces older kids to text typing skills.
  • Downloadable Content: Additional games and content will be available for download so kids can customize their MobiGo with the latest innovative games and continue the learning and fun for years to come.
  • Portable: Hand-held gaming console makes learning fun on the go for little hands and is equipped with headphone and AC adapter jacks.

The MobiGo Touch Learning System is ideal for children ages 3 to 8 years of age. Just check out my daughter with her new toy below:

(My daughter vlogging about MobiGo from New York Chica on Vimeo.)

Want to buy it?

As of yesterday, the MobiGo is available exclusively at Toys R US and on their web site. It retails for $59.99 and currently there are 11 licensed title games such as Dora the Explorer, Disney Fairies, Pixar’s Toy Story 3 and more.

MyBlogSpark and General Mills Sweet and Salty Review & Giveaway 92

Posted on May 30, 2010 by Lisa

My family and I love our snacks.  After dinner, we like to have a sweet or salty snack to calm the savage beast within us (LOL).  We can’t help it. It’s that time to relax, watch some TV and enjoy each other’s company.  But there are times when we have nothing to snack on so I’ll drive to our local convenience store to get some much needed grub.

When I’m at the store, I tend to browse all the aisles looking for that perfect snack, especially when I’m alone.  Either I’m looking for something sweet like chocolate or something salty (and/or spicy) like chips. It’s either one of the two (when I’m “watching” my weight) or sometimes even both.

Thanks to MyBlogSpark and General Mills, I was sent a box of “Sweet and Salty” snacks to try out with my husband (and kids).  They wanted to know if the man in my life has a sweet tooth or enjoys a salty snack.  I have to say he’s a little bit of both – it just depends on his “mood”.

Below are the snacks we were sent:

* Cocoa Puffs Treats Triple Chocolate: An indulgent cereal bar that combines the great taste of Cocoa Puffs cereal and chocolate into one decadent treat, Cocoa Puffs Treats Triple Chocolate is perfect for satisfying any sweet tooth.

* Bugles Hot Buffalo: Need something salty with a bit of a kick? Look no further than Bugles Hot Buffalo Crisp Corn Snacks, which blends the taste of hot buffalo sauce with crispy corn Bugles.

* Nature Valley Oats ‘N Dark Chocolate Crunchy Granola Bars: If you want the best of both worlds, give Nature Valley Oats ‘N Dark Chocolate Crunchy Granola Bars a try. These bars mix dark chocolate pieces, oats and crisp rice nuggets for a classic crunch and burst of whole grain goodness, making them a perfect natural snack that’s high in fiber and protein, but low in saturated fat.

As soon as my husband found out that he would be helping with this review, he was thrilled.  He loves to try new foods and snacks so he made sure he tried all three.

The Cocoa Puffs were my least favorite (and my husband’s too) but my kids went wild for them. They were so happy we didn’t enjoy them as much as they did because it meant more for them.

My husband’s favorite snack were the Hot Buffalo Bugles. He said it had a great corn flavor and a spicy kick that were addicting.  He also said he couldn’t stop eating them.  It’s funny because he (almost) didn’t want to share the Bugles with the rest of us but eventually he did.  My kids, on the other hand were not big fans – they said it tasted weird. I guess that’s because they are used to the regular Bugles that I buy.  I’m a huge fan of the regular Bugles. I grew up eating them when I was a kid but these were a nice change from what I’m used to.  If you love spicy hot buffalo wings, you’ll enjoy these bugles.

Everyone enjoyed the Chocolate granola bars. They were a huge hit.  I love granola bars so to have chocolate mixed in with granola made them extra tasty and delicious.

Simply… Go-Gurt Yogurt – Review & Giveaway 64

Posted on April 22, 2010 by Lisa

***GIVEAWAY ENDED***

Winner is

CONGRATULATIONS DENISE!!!!!!

Growing up, yogurt was not a staple in my house. Since my mom did not eat it, she didn’t buy it. So since she didn’t like it, she thought I wouldn’t either.

She was right – to an extent.

The first time I tried it, I hated it. It was something I never wanted to eat again until I tried it in a smoothie. The smoothie was delicious with bananas, pineapple, strawberries, milk & of course, the star – strawberry flavored yogurt.

When I had kids, I introduced them to yogurt at a very early age so they all love yogurt by the container. My youngest, who’s five, loves yogurt especially if it’s in a fun wrapper-tube like Simply… Go-Gurt Yogurt.

When I first bought the box of Simply… Go-Gurt, my daughter immediately wanted to eat one. The flavor we brought home was mixed berry. She loved it. I loved the fact that it does not contain any artificial colors, flavors or sweeteners so I know that she is eating something that is healthy.

New Simply… Go-Gurt is made from simple ingredients moms look for and contains no high fructose corn syrup or artificial colors or flavors. Each convenient portable yogurt tube contains a good source of calcium and vitamin D. Simply stated, Simply… Go-Gurt is a good-for-you, low fat yogurt snack that you can feel good about giving to your kids.

New Simply… Go-Gurt is available in two kid-friendly flavors, Strawberry and Mixed Berry.

Yoplait has created a customized micro site filled with great tips and 30 free coupons, so the first 30 readers who click on the “Free Yogurt” tab will receive a coupon for a free package of Simply…Go-Gurt. After the 30 coupons are claimed, the micro site will include a link to a $1.10 off coupon so everyone who visits can share in the savings

Please note: This coupon offer for free Simply… Go-Gurt is not valid in some states, including California, Idaho, Louisiana, Minnesota, New Jersey, Nevada, North Dakota and Tennessee.

Giveaway

Thanks to Yoplait and MyBlogSpark, they are offering one lucky New York Chica reader their very own prize package that I received. They will receive a “Simplify Your Life” prize pack that includes a pocket Etch a Sketch, weekly planner and a seat back organizer.

Olay Total Effects Body Wash – Review & Giveaway 45

Posted on March 30, 2010 by Lisa

Ever since I was a little girl, mi abuela (my grandma) always told me to make sure I use moisturizer everyday and to protect my skin when I’m outdoors with sunscreen. She should know, her skin is phenomenal – so soft and young looking considering she is in her 70′s.

When I was a teenager, I caught my dad applying my mom’s Oil of Olay face lotion. I laughed because I told him that was for women. He stated it’s face moisturizer with hardly any scent so it’s perfect for men too – you should start using it too.

I thought I’m only 15, why should I?  But I took his advice (and my abuela’s advice too) and I’ve been an Olay user ever since.  I’m so happy I did because I’ve been told by numerous people that I look like I’m still in my twenties! Imagine that!  Those comments always make my day, especially when I’m feeling old and frumpy.

Since my skin tends to be very dry, especially in the winter, I’m always applying moisturizer so I buy a bottle of Olay every month.

A few weeks ago, MyBlogSpark contacted me to try out Olay’s new body wash, Olay Total Effects Deep Penetrating Moisture Wash.  I was immediately interested.  I had no idea that Olay  had a total effects line of body washes but I’m glad they do now. I’m in my thirties now so I don’t want to want my skin looking old and raggedy before its time.

So through MyBlogSpark, Olay sent me a full size bottle of the body wash and a body sponge to review.  I have to be honest and say my skin looks radiant, feels a lot smoother & so much more softer. The scent is intoxicating also.  I find myself smelling my arms constantly.  My husband even said he loves the the way it smells on me ;) .

Olay has other body washes but this is their most advanced body wash.  Total Effects goes beyond cleansing to deeply moisturize and fight 7 signs of aging all over your body.

  • Improves elasticity
  • Relieves dryness
  • Deeply moisturizes
  • Brightens dull skin
  • Evens skin tone
  • Smoothes rough skin
  • Minimizes the appearance of dry lines

In only one day of showering, your skin feels smooth and soft.  After one week of using the body wash, your skin’s elasticity improves and after one month, your skin starts to look radiant and young.  You can’t go wrong.

Now onto the great news for you! THE GIVEAWAY! Olay, through MyBlogSpark, has provided one lucky New York Chica reader a $10 gift card to Walmart to purchase their very own Olay Total Effects Body Wash.

Main Entry

Answer this question: Have you ever used Olay products? If so, which product? If you haven’t used any Olay products, tell us why.

All you have to do is make a kids TV show/movie with Moviestorm and if it’s good enough to make its debut on TV, you win!  It can be done anywhere in the world, in any language and on any network.

If you haven’t heard of Moviestorm, it’s really simple and easy to use.  Let me explain the basics on what exactly is Moviestorm.  Moviestorm is a virtual movie studio, sort of like the game Sims, but you are the creator instead of the player.  It includes everything you would need to make awesome animated movies.  Unlike other animation tools, you don’t have to pay lots of money to buy it.  Instead, it’s subscription-based, and costs just $8/month – that’s just $0.25 a day!

There’s a free version for Windows and Mac so whatever PC you use, you can make movies wherever you are.  The site has a unique content rental system that works like a real-world movie-making program. Your subscription can be used to rent content packs by the day or by the month, so you only pay for what you actually use, and you don’t have a big up-front cost for expansion packs.  There are lots of content packs, so you can make all sorts of movies: romance, music videos, horror, sci-fi, cop shows, etc.  The list goes on and on.

You can let your imagination roam wild with this program.  Just think of this – you can become a director in the comfort of your own home! I bet you never thought of that, huh?

Suave Kids Wash Them Grow Sweepstakes | Review & Giveaway! 2

Posted on February 19, 2010 by Lisa

My kids loved taking baths when they were babies but when they got older, they wanted to “feel big” and start showering as opposed to taking baths. My 4 year old loves baths but also loves the shower. She said it’s an indoor rainfall.  So she takes baths when she wants to play and showers when she wants some “rain”.

Suave Kids® has started a new campaign, Wash Them Grow, to encourage parents to turn bath time into quality family time. Suave Kids encourages parents to teach, nurture and transition their child through the stages of growth and cleansing.

Suave Kids created www.washthemgrow.com an online forum for parents which includes a trivia game and tips generated by parents, for parents. The trivia game features a virtual child that you can literally watch grow with each correctly answered question.

As part of the campaign, Suave Kids is inviting moms across the country to visit WashThemGrow.com to play a fun online trivia game, after which she’ll receive an automatic entry into the Suave Kids Wash Them Grow Sweepstakes.  Trivia is refreshed daily, and each game play gives her another chance to win weekly prizes such as a laptop, video camera and digital camera.

Plus, one lucky winner will win a Grand Prize family vacation to Orlando!  Today through February 22, 2010, moms can visit WashThemGrow.com daily to play the game and literally watch her virtual child grow with each correctly answered question.  Mom can also boost her chances of winning by referring friends to play the Wash Them Grow game.

The lucky Grand Prize winner of the Suave Kids Wash Them Grow sweepstakes will receive round trip air transportation from the airport nearest her home city to Orlando, Florida; seven nights deluxe garden view accommodations at a luxury hotel; additional spending money; and seven day park passes which include unlimited admission to the major Orlando theme parks.

Don’t forget to tell your friends to visit www.washthemgrow.com and enter everyday until February 22nd.  Good luck!

Suave sent me 4 bottles of bodywashes in 4 different scents to review and try out.   They are:

*Suave Kids Berry Body Wash – This hypoallergenic and ophthalmologist tested formula makes bath time tear-free.  The gentle formula cleanses effectively without drying out skin like a bar soap can and features a fun, fresh scent.
*Suave Kids Strawberry Body Wash – This hypoallergenic and ophthalmologist tested formula makes bath time tear-free.  The gentle formula cleanses effectively without drying out skin like a bar soap can and features a fun, fresh scent.
*Suave Kids Free and Gentle Body Wash – Suave Kids Free and Gentle Body Wash is specially formulated to be gentle on skin.  It is ophthalmologist tested and tear-free.  The formula contains no dyes and leaves skin clean and fresh.
*Suave Kids Moisturizing Body Wash – Suave Kids Moisturizing Body Wash gently cleanses and moisturizes, leaving kids’ skin feeling baby soft and smooth.  This product is tear-free, hypo-allergenic and gentle on kids’ delicate skin. (There were all great but this is my favorite.  My 4 year old has dry skin and this body wash kept her skin really soft and sweet smelling too.)

(They all retail for about $1.99 – $2.50 so they are quite afforadable!)

THE GIVEAWAY

Suave is sponsoring a giveaway for one lucky reader to win their very own collection of bodywashes that you see above.  The winner will receive 4  full size bottles that were mentioned.

MANDATORY RULE

Tell me what is your favorite body wash that you use on yourself or your kids.
