Motherhood Out Loud: Not Just For Moms!

Call me crazy but ever since I was a little girl, I wanted children — specifically a boy for the first-born.  At the tender age of 21, I found out I was pregnant and no, it was not planned but I was gleaming with joy.

I like to say my son matured me. He made me realize that I was no longer first, it was him, and I had no problem whatsoever. Even though it took me until I got home to fall in love with him, he was my real-life doll.  I dressed him, played with him, took him to the park (which I do not like but did anyway) and probably overfed him at times.  He looked hungry all the time!

But now that I have 3 children, I feel complete.  You know that saying, everything comes in threes? Well for me, it did and I couldn’t be any happier.

Last week, my friend Rachel and I went to see a play at the Primary Stages Theater on the East Side at 59th street.  It’s called Motherhood Out Loud.

Motherhood Out Loud
The title could not be any perfect because motherhood can and will be loud many times in life.  If you’re a parent, you know exactly what I mean.

Susan Rose, Robin Gorman Newman, Elliot Fox, Rene Syler, Lisa Loomer, Claire LaZebnik and Mary Bacon.

About: When entrusting the subject of motherhood to such a dazzling collection of celebrated American writers, what results is a joyous, moving, hilarious, and altogether thrilling play. Utterly unpredictable, Motherhood Out Loud shatters traditional notions about parenthood, unveils its inherent comedy and celebrates the deeply personal truths that span and unite generations.

Motherhood Out Loud reveals with illuminating insight the humor, raw emotions and rocky roads we experience in life. Primary Stages presents the New York premiere of the new play, conceived by Susan R. Rose and Joan Stein, and written by Leslie Ayvazian, Brooke Berman, David Cale, Jessica Goldberg, Beth Henley, Lameece Issaq, Claire LaZebnik, Lisa Loomer, Michele Lowe, Marco Pennette, Theresa Rebeck, Luanne Rice, Annie Weisman and  Cheryl L. West, under the direction of Lisa Peterson.

The play is a life cycle approach about parenting from beginning to end.  It starts off with a first-time mother, then it goes on to showing us how fast the first year can be.  It also touches on subjects that all parents will go through one time or another such as religion, in-laws, competing parents at the park, adoption, sex, going away to college, being a surrogate mother and so much more.

I can honestly say that when the play was over, I was upset. I wanted more because it depicts some of what’s going on in my life now.  I laughed, I cried, I even told Rachel that wow, there ARE moms who hate the park as much as me.

Finally, a show that understands me and every other mom in the world!

And even if you’re not a mother, father or a parent, you NEED to see this play because you will understand what your parents went through raising you.

After the play, I was fortunate enough to listen to a special talk back moderated by Rene Syler (Good Enough Mother), who is a phenomenal speaker and all-around sweet person. Hearing her speak about her life makes you appreciate what you have. She’s that intense — in a good way.
