School’s been out for a few weeks here in New York and my kids are becoming “Summer Bums.” They want to sleep in, stay indoors (they are complaining it’s too hot — Hello! It’s Summer!) and just play video games.
Well, I surprised them when I told them I would give them each a weekly packet they would have to complete for this summer.
They whined, complained and they gave me the evil eye. I don’t care. I know it’s summer and they have had a hectic year trying to get good grades but it’s been proven by researchers, that during the summer months, students lose their reading skills — a trend known as “Summer Slide.”
Recognizing this trend, Target and Soleil Moon Frye (Punky Brewster!) has committed to helping parents avoid the Summer Slide.
I’m proud to help Target spread the word on the Summer Slide awareness. I’m also happy to have had the wonderful opportunity to interview Soleil Moon Frye where she provided answers to my emailed questions. Check out the video below:

My older two have so much reading and homework for the summer that I really don’t need to give them anything else. It is a side effect of being a college bound student. My little one gets read to every day and I have downloaded some preschool apps on my Kindle that help him learn a whole lot and retain it.

My son is only three so not at school age yet but the things we do to make sure he keeps his brain ticking are puzzles, arts and crafts, the number plate game when in the car, I spy, etc. I am constantly asking him questions and to look for things, poor kid probably needs a summer vacation away from me lol.

I have been encouraging my son to read, but what really helped was that they are doing a reading incentive program at my son’s summer camp!
we have reading time where i give him 10 mins. per book which is 3 books of different subjects.
