Verizon FIOS: The Switch That Made The Difference #MC

Disclosure: I wrote this review while participating in a Test Drive campaign by Mom Central on behalf of Verizon FiOS and received a free trial of the products and services necessary to facilitate my review.
Verizon FIOS (Fiber Optic Service) has been in my neighborhood for the past two years.  The deals Verizon had enticed most of my neighbors to switch cable providers but I wasn’t so convinced.

Since Time Warner was our cable/internet provider for many years, I guess you can say we were too lazy to switch because it wasn’t that TWC gave us superb service.  Not at all.  And through out those years, I can’t tell you how many times we’ve been without both internet and phone.  And don’t get me started on the DVR manager box.  Sometimes we would look for a recorded show and guess what? The show wouldn’t be there. I have no idea why that would happen but it happened quite too often.

Lately Time Warner Cable has been on our naughty list.  There were days when we were without internet and phone for hours for no apparent reason.  I would call TWC to find out what was going on and to my surprise, TWC would respond with “Things look good on our end.” So needless to say, we were ready for a change.

When Mom Central sent out an email to their members to sign up to join their Verizon FIOS Campaign, I filled out the form with the quickness and hoped for the best.

A few weeks later, I got an email stating that I was chosen.  You have no idea how happy I was. Not only was I going to finally say goodbye to Time Warner Cable but I was also excited to join my neighbors on one of the fastest internet connections available.  It’s a blogger’s dream to have fast connection.

Making the appointment

Making the installation appointment was fairly easy.  The representative was extremely nice and explained that I would need a 6-8 hour window for the technician.  I was shocked. 6-8 hours? She explained that they would need to make sure the wires are installed correctly and they would need to install two boxes – one on the outside of the house and one in the inside.  After the wiring, the technician has to do some diagnostics on the cable boxes and explain how everything works.

Day of Installation

The day came for installation.  The representative told me the technician would come by between 8am and 12pm.  He got here at 9am.  I showed him to the basement where the router was and where we wanted the box installed.

He mentioned he would be outside drilling into the house so if we heard loud noise, not to be alarmed.  He was outside for almost two hours, coming in and out to check on things in the basement.

Once he was done outside, he went to the basement to get things done with the router.

Just in case you were wondering, Verizon FIOS uses the existing cable wires that are in your home so there’s no need to rewire the whole house.  That was one of my concerns.

Once everything was installed in the basement, he started to install the 3 cable boxes upstairs – the living room, the den and my bedroom. The cable guy was very informative.  He explained everything and even though he took the time to teach us how Verizon FIOS works, he was out of our house in about 4-1/2 hours.

4-1/2 hours??!!

He said he was surprised that it was an easy installation with no problems whatsoever.

So far, we’ve had Verizon FIOS for a week and I can’t stop smiling.  I keep saying to myself, why didn’t I make the switch earlier? The internet is quick, the HD channels look crisp and clear and I haven’t had a dropped call.

Overall, Verizon FIOS is the best thing that has happen to cable TV. Stay tuned to find out what we love best about Verizon FIOS (there’s A LOT!).

  1. Excellent post! Thank you for summarizing the install process. I live in an HOA community that contracts with TWC. Crossing my fingers that they pass a vote so I can get Verizon Fios.

  2. I’ve wanted to switch to Verizon Fios for a while but they are still not available in my neighborhood. I hear its much more affordable and there is great service. Down with monopolies! Lol.

  3. Really informative post about your experience with Verizon Fios! Encouraging for others to try it out as well.

  4. Can I just say, I love today’s technology. Maybe too much? LOL
Glad it worked out for you!
