Freestyle Music: Forever in my Heart

Lisa-Lisa and The Cult Jam
Like many Freestyle music lovers, freestyle music is my heart and soul.  I grew up listening to KTU on the radio and buying cassette tapes so I can listen in the comfort of my apartment back in the 80’s and early 90’s.

Ever since I could remember, I have loved all types of music, specifically any music I can dance my butt off to.  I loved Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Lionel Ritchie, Cyndi Lauper and even a little bit of Rock & Roll but the music that stays in my heart is definitely Freestyle Music.

If you know exactly what I’m talking about then you know I’m referring to singers such as Coro, Lisa-Lisa and The Cult Jam, George Lamond, Lisette Melendez, Debbie Deb, Stevie B, TKA – I can literally go on and on adding more artists.

My memory isn’t exactly the best but the second I listen to freestyle music, I can remember my childhood with just the beat.  It takes me back to those days when I was stuck in my bedroom because I couldn’t leave the house, thanks to my very strict Puerto Rican mother.  All I did was listen to the songs and clean my room.  I think I was one of the few teenagers that had the cleanest rooms because while my friends were out playing double dutch or riding their bikes, I was home in my own little universe making sure my room was spotless. And while I cleaned, I also danced my butt off too pretending I was one of the singers.

Don’t laugh, you know you used to do the same thing. I remember singing Dream Boy/Dream Girl and forcing my sister to sing the male part because I was the “princess”. True story! My sister will forever hate me for that one! LOL

Those were the good ol’ days.  Yes, even though I was leashed by my beloved mother.

Last week, I took my love of Freestyle to Twitter and had a conversation with @MCiscart, @NYCPatty and @RachlWhite about our love for Freestyle music and we also reminisced. I found a site where they provide small clips of the song which I will take as a reference when I download some freestyle music for my iPod. Woo Hoo!

Note to self: Must plan a house party will ONLY Freestyle Music.

No other genre makes me feel alive quite like Freestyle.  It makes any ordinary day feel like a brand new day. If I’m depressed or just not feeling like myself, Freestyle music takes me to a happy place.

Do you have a happy place?

Below is a video I found on Youtube with many of the songs that I enjoy listening to. These songs get me in the best mood ever! It also helps me clean my house. 😉

Let me tell you girl, we must’ve grown up in the same house!!! I was not allowed oustide and I lived in music. I;’d sing my freestyle music and record it from the radio with my cabbage patch recorder.

You brought back sooo many memories!

    Best,

    • I totally forgot about that too! I always had my record button ready when I heard my favorites and then immediately press pause when the commercial came on. Hated those commercials! LOL

  5. Just added your Button to my Blog 🙂

  6. This is I @mciscart, and yes our random conversation did brighten up my day as well, as the memories came rushing back. Growing up in a house hold with a strict mom’s as well. I remember my mom’s had the classic spanish music while my brothers in the basement had the freestyle blasting during Sunday clean up. Freestyle is defenitely feel good music. And thanks for that extensive list since I’m working on updating my music library with music I have missed or was to young to go out and buy myself. I will be hitting up best buy’s and J&R music. Yes I still buy CD’s but have well over 35K tunes on my computer or which I have “ALMOST” every CD for!

  7. OMG! You know how much I love Freestyle. No matter where I am, if I hear Freestyle, it’s like everything stops and I’m in the zone. My mom said when I was a baby my dad would carry me around and dance or rock me to sleep, all to Freestyle. Maybe that’s one of the reason I love it so much. I remember your sister used to make me sing the male parts. Thanks for that! But yes, Freestyle is amazing and you know, in the BX, it the official start of summer when some Puerto Rican drives down the block with his PR flag on the hood, windows down and Freestyle blasting out of them. 🙂

I loved this! I grew up on house/freestyle/dance music because that’s all my mother listened to in the 90’s! This definitely brought back memories LOL. My sister Lisette was actually named after Lisette Melendez lol. 🙂

  10. I agree… I too love freestyle… I’m a freak… I was blessed when freestyle music came into my live back in late 80s early 90s I was in my late twenties so I was able to go to 1018s, Rockets, all the clubs that featured freestyle to this day I go to the concerts whenever they are here in NY or NJ…. I have over 400 songs of freestyle in my ipod…. and I enjoy every single song… like everything else that comes back into style… freestyle music should come back as well….

  11. Freestyle is a favorite too. When I went to college, no one even knew what I was talking about. I remember going to see Cynthia and Johnny O at Martys and Lennys in New Rochelle. I remember going to Fordham Prep dances and seeing others perform too. My good friend is friends with Judy Torres and back in the day, I would go with her to see her perform too. Memories!
