The Making of the Film:

BAMBI was Walt Disney’s fifth animated full-length feature film which released in 1942 during World War II and took approximately five years in the making due to the exquisite artwork and attention to detail of each and every scene, character and figure.  The artwork itself was created by some of the legendary “nine old men,” including Frank Thomas, Ollie Johnston, Marc Davis, Milt Kahl and Eric Larson and in order to achieve the film’s unprecedented level of realism, animators modeled anatomical studies using live animals (including a pair of fawns named Bambi and Faline) and imbued each with a uniquely endearing personality. Bambi’s delightful forest home received the same painstaking attention to detail, as background artists painted hundreds of landscapes based on extensive field research and nature photographs.

Walt Disney broke the longstanding animation tradition by casting child actors in the roles of Bambi’s young animals, including Bobby Stewart as Baby Bambi, Donnie Dunagan as Young Bambi, Hardie Albright as Adolescent Bambi and Peter Behn as Young Thumper. The cast also includes Sam Edwards as Adult Thumper, John Sutherland as Adult Bambi, Paula Winslowe as Bambi’s Mother and Sterling Holloway (the voice of Winnie the Pooh and The Jungle Book’s Kaa, the snake) as Adult Flower.

My Thoughts

I remember watching Bambi as a child. I loved it.  There isn’t a Disney movie that I haven’t watched. Yes, you can say I’m a bit obsessed with Disney but who isn’t?  Disney brings out the inner child to any adult and brings out the innocence to all children.  When I heard Disney was releasing Bambi Diamond Edition on Blu-ray and DVD, I jumped at the chance when I was offered to review a copy.

There’s a funny story in my family.  When my husband and I first had our son, I was going crazy with buying every kid’s movie that was out, especially all of the Disney movies.  There was one particular movie that my husband “banned” from our house.  That movie was Bambi.

You ask why? Well it’s because he’s a deer hunter. He claims the movie will only confuse our son with what he does.  I, being the tough Latina that I am,  refused to let him tell me what to buy and what not to buy for our son.  As hard as I tried to find it to buy it, I could not to no availability. I told my husband that one day I will buy Bambi for our kids.  So not only did I prove him wrong, we got to see it digitally remastered on high definition — even better.

My five year old was ecstatic when we received the movie.  She quickly opened it and played it on our Playstation 3 and we watched the whole movie.  It was a quick movie, at only 70 minutes.  The movie was beautifully remastered.  There is no comparison with the DVD. You must watch Bambi on Blu-ray.  The animation is spectacular.  Disney really knows how to remaster their “old” movies the right way.

My favorite part of Bambi was when when she became shy when meeting a new friend. My daughter is just the same when meeting another little friend so Bambi reminded me of my daughter.  This movie is definitely a feel-good movie for me.
